Anna’s Hummingbirds The Anna’s are a larger, dark green bird with an iridescent purple throat patch! Watch for them feeding throughout the gardens! ______________________ Chestnut Backed Chickadee
One of our favorites! A pair excavated a nest this spring in the willow in front of the house! Listen for their tell-tale “Chicka-dee-dee-dee!” They are often at the feeders, but you must be quick to see them. Chickadees, titmice and nuthatches each take a single seed from a feeder, then fly off to a tree to eat it or stash it! ______________________ Black-Headed Grosbeak
Vibrantly colored with black, white and orange, the female is duller on the left above. We consistently have nesting pairs year after year. They have a beautiful song, somewhat like the Bullock’s oriole. You will find them in the back garden near the birches. They are also at the bird feeders near the front of the house. Watch for them at the platform feeder in the front rose garden. They are easily visible from the stand where we weigh your fruit! ______________________ California Quail
We have several different coveys of quail scattered around the orchards. Though they are cautious around crowds, they are more readily seen during peach season than cherry season. Their families are very mobile and forage through the orchards for dried seeds. You will probably hear them before you see them with the male’s call of “Sit right here, sit right here!” We also scatter millet for them in the back of the house under the “Shrub Row” where they feel safe to feed under the sheltering branches. ______________________ House Finch
These funny little birds are very common. Find them in bushes, trees, on the ground, and in the air! Listen for their happy little songs! The babies from their first hatches are flying around driving their parents crazy right now. Watch for them at all the bird feeders. They are easily distinguished from the males by their coloring, but their fluttering wings as they complain loudly to their feeding parents makes them unmistakable! ______________________ |
